Project Managers – What are the key personality traits

What is the key personality trait required by a project manager?

Let’s suppose that I need a project manager and I am going through a selection process. You have a number of CV’s from project managers in front of you – what are you looking for in a project manager? For me the key thing I try to find out about someone is do they have a sense of ownership for their work and are they involved in it?

Someone once said to me that to be a good project manager you must feel and display a sense of complete ownership for the project and its outcome. After all the client / employer / manager is giving one person the responsibility for delivering the project (others may take the accountability). If the captain of the ship has a sense of ownership about the project then they will project this passion onto the teams they are managing and the customers they are delivering for.

  12. I personally feel that a project manager should really know completely about ins and outs of the project and should be able to work if needed, and should be first at setting examples, he should be a leader of the sorts for the project.

  13. For a good project manager the project should be on eof the main priorities in life. He should treat a successfull project as a personal success and a failure of the project as a personal failure.
This ensures that he will do anything for the project to succeede.

  17. ownership is definitely key- as if the PM doesn't feel close to, and responsible for, the project then they are unlikely to go the extra mile for it.

  18. I agree with most of what has been said previously. To me, a project manager who can get their crew involved in the outcome of the project seems to have fewer problems during construction.

People need a sense of proprietorship and to know that their work will be recognised. It then becomes up to them to do work they would like to be recognised for. This is a personal incentive ~ a real stake in the outcome of the project.

  20. 100% agree with the comments here. I do a lot of project management work and I take full responsibility in delivering the project on time, and making sure the quality is right. If something goes wrong or there are delays, im the one who is at fault.
